]]>Is there a better sight to see than a Barn Owl flying at dusk, weaving and turning as it hunts its prey. It makes your spine tingle as you watch and admire this beautiful "ghost hunter". To see it, count yourself very lucky,however to photograph it flying is something very special. The memory will live with you for a long time.
As a photographer something inside you wants to go back and try again, hoping, preying you get better light, however at the end of the day does it really matter !! no it doesn't, be thankful you got the chance to see this magnificent bird weaving its spell over you.

The Images you are looking at are my first real efforts of getting to grips with them. They are very skittish, and if they see you, they're off over the hill and far away. I'm hoping to photograph them again in the near future.

Field craft is important if you want the best shots, and not their backsides as they disappear out of sight.

]]>I spent about an hour photographing these frogs in a murky pond, mating and their habits.
When the sun came out it turned the water a deep blue, hence the unusual colour in the Image... I've done little to it, other than a crop... I like the psychedelic look of the Image.

Life gets even more complicated when the bird is flying low and erraticlally. .. I had no alternative but to use the center focusing point. ]]>On Monday 28th November, I had an early morning start, travelling up to Dumfries & Galloway to photograph the wildlife.

By lunchtime the weather quickly deteriorated, High winds and heavy rain putting a stop to any photography. The following morning the weather had really turned nasty, torrential rain and high winds during the night continued during the morning, causing serious flooding on the roads, impossible to do any photography, but just had to head home. These are the only two photographs I have to show during my two days. A round trip of 430 miles, and only two Images, not the best of returns, that's nature photography, you win some and lose some. Not to be defeated, I will go back at a later date.

]]>Recently I went to the North West Birdwatching Festival at Martin Mere. After lunch I spent about 15 minutes taking photographs of some of the birds in the enclosure.
I've often been asked how do I get started in nature photography.My advice, is go to places like Martin Mere. Here you can learn the art of sharpness, composition and exposure, and without the use of long lenses and sitting in hides. For these 7 Images I used Canon equipment, 5D MK 2 body and a 70-200 f4 IS lens hand held. I hope this information and Images will give ideas to photographers who are on the first rung of the ladder.

]]>I decided to take advantage of a warm sunny day in late November. I took the 500mm lens hoping to photograph some small woodland birds from a hide. See Woodpecker, Great Tit, and Blue Tit. To my surprise what appeared in front of the camera, was the Pheasant and the Jay..... Both big in the frame, however look at the beautiful feather detail of the Pheasant as it merges into autumnal background.

]]>This European Eagle Owl was seen on a lamppost in a residential housing estate off Lowercroft Road in Bury. There is no doubt that it was a captive bird that had escaped.

The bird was comfortable with the noise of the people around it.
You could see by the bones under the lampost that the bird was feeding well, and in good condition.. It stayed around for 6 days, then left.

]]>I'm ashamed to say I haven't really photographed the Coot,mainly because it's such a commom bird. However to photograph it properly, you have to get the feather detail correct (black) and the white bill and forehead showing detail as well. Easier said than done. Over the coming months I hope to spend more time with this bird.
They are known for always squabbling, and that's amongst themselves. It should be fun, I hope!!!

]]>To see a wild Barn Owl in flight is a magical sight.
To actually photograph the bird is something really special.

When I photographed the Barn Owl, it wasn't the best of evenings, poor light and windy, which kept the bird from flying... The Image, to me, has a ghostly haunting feeling.

]]>This photograph clearly shows the Golden Eagle in it's natural habitat..with the snowy mountain and high conifer trees. The mountain translated to english is "Beautiful Mountain" who am I to disagree. it was magical just to be there.. I will return, and hopefully photograph the majestic Golden Eagle again. It simply takes your breath away when you first see it.... The last time that happened, was when I went to India to photograph the Bengal Tiger.

]]>This is the carcass the Golden Eagle had been feeding on.
It's an ideal opportunity for a pair of Siberian Jays to feed.

Without the help of the eagle ripping open the carcass, small birds would find it impossible to get into the carcass.

This pair of Jays flew backwards and forwards picking up food, obviously storing it for tougher days ahead.

]]>We spent 3 days in a hide (11 hours a day, not for the faint hearted) on an Island called Smola which juts out in the north sea. To reach the Island you have to go on a ferry.
Our objective was to photograph the White-Tailed Eagle.

Unfortunately it wasn't to be, we didn't get a single shot of them.We can only put it down the atrocious weather conditions.
We did however get a couple of shots of a juvenile shown here.

]]>These Hooded Crows were sitting it out in the most horrendous weather conditions.. high winds with sleet, snow and hailstones thrown in for good measure... The hide we were sitting in also took a real hammering, it was so bad we couldn't keep the camera and lens still.

It almost came to a point as to whether we abandoned our photography for the day, very scary.
